Golf, unlike most ball games, does not and doesn't have an standardized playing field, and coping with the varied terrains encountered on different courses is an important aspect of playing. There are typically nine holes or 18 holes on a course. Each hole has a cup that holds the ball. A teeing area is used to start a hole while a cup houses the cup. There are a variety of terrain that lie between the green and the tee, including the fairway, rough (high grass) and other hazards like rock, water, or bunters filled with sand. Each hole of a course is unique in its specific layout.Golf is played with the lowest amount of strokes a player can make which is known as stroke play or the score that is the lowest on the most holes played in a full round, whether by an individual or a team, also known as match play. The stroke play format is the most frequently seen format at all levels, particularly at the elite level.
